The common thread running through this route is the activity along the water. The Westerdok, originally an island for dirty, noisy businesses, and the Houthavens have completely changed. But the warehouses and grain silos along Van Diemenstraat remain, though they are now apartments. In the harbors around the North Sea Canal, you can see, among other things, the transshipment of mountains of coal. The Zaan region was already a major industrial area in the 17th century. Cocoa and other sweet aromas still occasionally waft from this area to Amsterdam. Polder Oostzaan and Recreation Area 't Twiske are places where you can completely forget the urban hustle and bustle.
